ReCocoa has developed a patented bioactive flavanol technology, initially focused on cardiovascular and cardiometabolic health, with the long-term ambition of a platform supporting healthy ageing and diseases of ageing. We recognise that the conditions we focus on have a major impact on society and the quality of like as well as an economic impact.
The company has moved over the past fifteen years into the biotechnology space, propelled by innovative thinking and a radical approach to botanical science and the need to protect bioactives in food. This has been done in an environment where food manufacturing has become so industrialised that profit maximisation and marketing has overtaken the basic premise of nutritional value, leading to ultra-processed foods many made by extrusion. This has driven the obesity crisis, underpinned by cardiometabolic dysfunction particularly diabetes, into a global crisis. We want to relieve some of this pain.
The category we intend to occupy does not yet exist as a defined market. It sits between food, nutraceuticals, medical foods, natural therapeutics and future medicines. That is a progression, not a positioning statement.
Our first area of scientific focus is cardiovascular and cardiometabolic health, because that is where the biology, the evidence base and the global need are clearest. The longer ambition is healthspan.
